I too concur that attaching a machine to an electronic timer is no
more different than attaching it directly to the wall and flipping the
switch on the machine. I have a digital timer from Intermatic DT-27
which allows me to set multiple schedules. It is rated for 1800W and
there is some sort of electromagnetic AC controlled relay inside it
since you can hear a click inside the timer when you push the on/off
keypad button.

I think the correlation of the timer and machine failures may be due
to user error. I actually fried the pump of my Silvia machine with a
timer since I inadvertently left the brew switch on the night before
when the machine was off. Woke up the next morning with water all over
the place and a dead pump. :(
