When the lever is all the way down the brewing system is closed.  The group 
head is open through the blow off tube into the trip tray. But the boiler is 
sealed or water would run right out and that would be bad for all kinds of 
reasons. When you raise the lever it opens the brew boiler to the brew group.

Todd, are you sure about your statement pertaining to brew pressure? I thought 
that was only true of the steam boiler. How can the brew pressure circuit build 
pressure when it's an open circuit, i.e. with the lever all the way down?
