There's probably more line inside the machine--remove the inner perforated 
cover to check or just tug gently on the line. You are correct to be 
paranoid--I burned up a pump when my intake line floated and sucked air at 
startup (for something like ten minutes straight). I weighted my lines after 
that to keep them on the bottom.
