OK, now I feel like an idiot. I had the thought this morning that I might disconnect the leads to the high-limit switch on the steam boiler and check it for continuity, or perhaps even see if the Brewtus will turn on with the leads disconnected and taped up. So, I went into the kitchen to do this and — to my chagrin — discovered that one of the wires to the pressurestat hadn't been reconnected. The NO (normally open) lead was sitting on top of the pressurestat, apparently grounding against the case. How could I have forgotten to reconnect that wire??? (Don't ask...). I reconnected the wire and turned on the Brewtus. The steam boiler red light came right on, but the wall outlet ground fault breaker didn't trip.
I stood in front of the machine as both boilers heated up. The steam boiler hit 1.3 bars and kept right on going, headed for 2.0 and a high-limit trip. Turning the pressurestat adjustment screw all the way in either direction had no effect at all on the runaway train, so it appears that the pressurestat is indeed broken. I assume that's what was indicated earlier when I checked the continuity. Both circuits (normally open and normally closed) had positive continuity, where I think one is supposed to be open (no continuity) and the other closed (continuity). Apparently, pressurestat has gone south and died. I've now ordered another Jaeger pressurestat from chriscoffee (which appears to be the only online source for the Jaeger), so now the wait begins for the part to arrive.
