When I was in Geology Field Camp, one of our projects was located outside
Pinedale, WY. (Freaky coincidence: one of my co-workers at BLS is *from*
Pinedale, WY!) Anyhow, Pinedale is the very definition of "open range",
and during June and July summer days, the temperature would regularly climb
above 100 degrees, with nothing resembling shade. Our instructions were
basically to drink our canteen of water by lunch, at which point we would
be met by the professor at an agreed-upon spot to be refilled. Then, we
should plan to be heading out of the field by no later than 3:00pm.

The interesting part of our instructions, though, was the next part. We
were basically told that there's no reason not to hitch-hike our way back
into town. After all, this is the "West", where people think you're funny
if you don't wave when you drive by.

Anyhow, on the first day, my field group happened to be one the very last
group to decide to pack it in, and head down the road into town.
Suffering greatly from the heat, we stopped by a little trickle of a stream
to cool off, and waved down the first pickup truck that came along. Not
only did we prevail upon them to give us a left, but we even convinced them
to stop for each of the other field groups as we caught up to them. By
the time it was all said and done, we had some 26 people crammed into the
back of that pickup truck. I can only imagine what the ticket would have
looked like!
