Sulfur melts at a pretty low temperature, doesn't chemically react 
much with anything (we're talking sulfur, not sulfuric acid),
and distributes pressure evenly when it cools and hardens.  One
example use of it is testing the strength of concrete samples.
The sulfur would be used as a cap on either end of the concrete
cylinder to make up for irregularities on the ends, which might
serve to unduly concentrate pressure in the following strength test.
