We've had something that, IMHO, is better than and more practical than a
SUV: a conversion van. We have 5 people in our family and when we shopped
for a replacement for our dying mini-van, we found that a full conversion
van was about 25% cheaper than a minivan.

We bought this 8 years ago, mainly for road trips. We'd drive from 1100 to
1300 miles straight to and from Houston to vacations in Minn/Wis. Teri and
I would switch driving, and the alternate driver would get the whole rear
seat to sleep in (there were 4 other seats).

It was great for road trips.

Our kids now drive it as their main car: its known as "the tank" by them.
People don't run lights in front of it. One girl rear ended my daughter Amy
at a stop sign. She had some significant damage, it took me a minute to
find the scratch on "the tank."

My eldest (who's 21) drove it to school, and my youngest (who's 14) is
looking forward to his turn. Its got 130k on it and is still going very
strong.
