I don't know what California is paying for gasoline - but in the Vancouver
B.C. area we're paying about $.70 per litre - and 4 litres is about halfway
between a U.S. and an Imperial gallon in size.  Even though a Canadian
dollar is only woth about $.64 U.S. (due to the government screwing up our
economy), they are still real dollars here and it's as hard to earn a dollar
here (harder, in fact - wages on a number for number basis aren't as high)
as it is in the U.S.  So, let's see - 4 x $.70 = $2.80 for sloghtly more
than your gallon.  If you then adjust for the exchange rate - $1.79 US for
slightly more than a gallon.  Expensive in your terms, but even more so in
ours...
