The Wright brothers successfully flew a heavier-than-air vehicle (an
airplane) in 1903 at Kitty Hawk.

Brazil native Santos-Dumont had flown balloons and dirigibles before then,
but didn't successfully fly his heavier-than-air vehicle until September
7th, 1906 (first flight comparable to the Wright brothers was Sept. 13).

That would put Alberto Santos-Dumont's flight near Paris three years *after*
Wilber and Orville Wright's flight near Kitty Hawk, NC.
