Those who should know will tell you that the primary reason that new
mothers (and other patients) are shown the door as quickly as possible is
the financial one, here in the US where I don't think you can get _any_
hospital room for under ten times the price you named, and that doesn't
even begin to cover the other costs involved other than renting a
room*. Perhaps Julia could tell us how long she was actually in the
hospital to give birth to Sam and what the bill came to.

*$10US won't even rent you a room in a cheap motel in the US
nowadays: expect to pay at least 3 to 5 times that if you stop for the night.
