Right now, the libertarians are one of two wings of the Republican
coalition. On some issues, I guess, they can be called left leaning. They
are not interested in prayer in school, and tend to favor legalizing all
drugs.
The foundation of their belief is minimal government. The government should
run the police, armed services and courts. There should be no regulation of
business, no government subsides of anything, no government social security,
no welfare, no governmental health programs, etc. Transportation should be
solely in the hands of the private sector, with toll roads intead of roads
paid for by taxes. There would be no environmental regulations, the market
would take care of that, along with the ability to sue for any damages to
person or property. The free market can virtually everything far better
than any government. (Note, this _is not_ my viewpoint, but a libertarian
viewpoint.)
Any libertarian on the list is more than welcome to comment on or correct
the above.
