But when will the cost go from "much" to "too much"? When and where do you
reach that turning point?

The problem with your argument is that when you get an idea, you usually
don't (and can't) know in advance how much money it will cost you.

When some people first thought that solar energy might be a good idea, they
couldn't know in advance which problems they would encounter, and thus not
know how much researching solar energy would cost them. It didn't stop them
from researching it, though. It has already cost a lot of money, but I still
wouldn't call the idea "obsolete".
