Neither would I call it obsolete.

Then again, I wouldn't automatically rave about solar energy without
comparing the marginal costs to marginal benefits.    Depending on how more
expensive solar energy is compared to coal or nuclear energy, it may well
be less efficient, and thus, worse for the environment to boot.
