Hi, you haven't met me face to face, but I'm a redneck. I grew up in the
South, my family is of Scots-Irish descent, my ancestors farmed for a
living, my grandfather lived in the hills of Tennessee and didn't wear shoes
7 months of the year, I listen to Bluegrass and Hank Williams, I *like* the
taste of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, I own a "Cat: Diesel Power" hat, I call
ladies "ma'am" and men "sir" (more like "suh" if it's too hot outside), and
I resent your characterizations.
*choosing words carefully*
I get very, very angry when people throw out the term "redneck" with an
apparent disregard for the real meaning of that word or the human beings
lumped under it. For your information, my father got the snot beaten out of
him by Alabama State Troopers while he was marching during the Civil Rights
movement. My grandparents (including the hillbilly grandfather - remember
him?) have been for the last 40 years active contributors to conservation
organizations. My, aren't they conservative and Bad?
You're displaying what look like unattractive prejudices, Kristin. I
honestly don't think you mean it that way, but fer Pete's sake listen to
what you sound like - "I don't like people that vote differently than me,
because they're WRONG, and I know this because they voted differently than I
do." Please, consider that those that voted for Bush might have voted for
him because they felt that he was the best choice. I disagree with that,
and in fact would have voted for Clinton again if I could have, but I'm
willing to give folks the benefit of a doubt. A pluralistic society such as
ours depends upon the free exchange of ideas and the interplay and
compromise inherent in our political system. If you don't like the way
things are, work to change them. Listen to your opponents, learn from them,
and speak calmly but with the force of truth to convince people that you're
correct. If you can't stand to listen to them, walk away. If you don't
want to walk away, put your fingers in your ears and sing, "LALALALALA I
CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALALALALA".
For what it's worth, BTW, I know 1 anarchist economist (he's also bugf**k
crazy, but he does have a degree in economics) and 2 socialist economists.
Besides John, I mean. That's 1 anarchist, 2 socialists, John (Republican)
and the bizarro homophobic guy that lived down the hall from me in college
(although he dropped out of school his senior year, so he's not degreed, I
don't think). It's running 3-2 in favor of the Left Wing on a personal
basis for me.
