Now you got me thinking. In SW all they have basically are laser weapons and
they seem to be as effective as guns, just they shoot photons instead of
bullets. So even ship mounted weapons are basically just photon machine
guns, or cannons. They punch big hole through things. If it hits a power
source, kaboom. (There were some shields IIRC). Doesn't it seem more 'right'
that stormtroopers would have shinny armor instead of white? Or that all
those little one man Imperial fighters should be mirror covered instead of
black? Anything but black. (Henry Ford to the Emperor: "You can have any
color you want as long as it's black.") Maybe the surface was covered with
solar panels. (The Empire was an environmental movement!) Heck why weren't
any of the weapons in the inferred range? Less power to make but could still
pack a whallop. Oh, then you couldn't see them being fired ;-)
ST on the other hand has these big ass, 'harness the power of the sun and
put it in you hand' weapons. Those hand carried plasma rifles could take
down a shuttle if it had to. Heck if Voyager could take out a Borg cube then
the enterprise could take out Death Stars. Spock to Captain Kirk, "I suggest
we don't get in front of that large circular crater." (BTW: How nice was it
that the starship named Voyager gets thrown to the other side of the galaxy.
Like they couldn't see that coming. Harry Kim is in his room after Academy
Graduation with two friends. Friend one opens his posting envelope: "It says
I'm to report to the USS Explosion by Warp Core Breach." Friend two, "Mine
says I'm going to the USS 15 Years of Routine Supply Runs. Guess I should
have studied harder." Harry says, "Mine says the USS Voyager." Both friends
look at each other and stand up. "Well good luck with that! We'll be going
now.")
So yes the Enterprise could take on SW vehicles with no trouble.
The real question of course is, what universe would you want to live in? I
would much rather be in the ST universe. (Motto "You can do it with
aliens!") So to that end I support Bush's Star Wars plan and anything that
will bring us bigger and more powerful weapons so we become more like the
Star Trek Universe.
