And in both the ST and SW universes, space must be always filled with so 
much dust & fog that you can _see_ the entire laser beam rather than just 
the dot where it hits a solid surface . . .

(Anyone else recall Arthur C. Clarke's parody of weapons with visible beams 
in _A Fall of Moondust_, and why what he describes is (intentionally) also 
physically impossible?)
