They picked domestic flights because the security on international flights is
generally much higher. What you have said here is true, but it isn't the
whole story.
If you've been watching the news, you've no doubt heard that the 18 hijackers
were here, in our country for at least two months before September 11. They
had passports from the United Arab Emirates. Investigators in the United
States and Germany have said at least two former flight school students in
Florida, Mohamed Atta, 33, and Marwan Alshehhi, 23, were identified as
terrorists aboard the two planes that smashed into the World Trade Center.
They apparently arrived in Florida with nothing but suitcases and money. No
place to stay. The flight school provided them housing.
Could a hightened state of awareness and security have prevented any of this?
Well, after the FAA enacted more stringent security measures, the FBI seems
to have apprehended several additional terrorists who managed to board planes
in New York yesterday. We do need greater internal security. I'd say most
Americans would agree that we also need to start taking very long looks at
people who enter our country. Other industrialized countries do it
effectively. We should as well.
