How does one become a Cowboy fan in NJ? Well, for me, it was because one of my older brother's and all my cousins were Cowboy fans. So I sort-of became one by default. I'm not entirely certain how they became fans but I think it had something to do with Roger Staubach. So I grew up having the Giants and the Redskins and the 49ers. All great rivalries.
Then again, this is the family that also were big, big, *BIG* St. Louis Cardinal baseball fans. Again, in NJ. (This apparently had something to do with the '68 World Series.) We could only see the Cards when they played the Mets at Shea. This was back when the Mets stunk and didn't draw very well. So you could go and root against the Mets and not have to worry about getting beat up. They only television or radio was when they played the Mets or the Phillies. Or sometimes at night you could barely pick up KMOX from St. Louis and hear part of the game. But that was difficult to say the least. Now I'm living in St. Louis. I remember clearly the first time I went to Busch Stadium to see a Cardinal Game. It was like going to Mecca. Sitting in the stands in a sea of red with 30,000 fans actually rooting and cheering for the same team I was!! I was in heaven. And so clean! And green. Wow. (The thing I remember being most startling was that people actually sang along with the National Anthem. At Shea it was sort of grudging and I don't think I ever saw anybody sing. They probably do now, though...) - John
