Well, Sturgeon's Law says that 90% of everything is crap. So 90% of
what's popular has to be crap, right?
I think that maybe Starbuck's was better than a lot of what else was
around when it was founded, but that a lot of places are better than
Starbuck's now, but anyone who got familiar with Starbuck's when it was
a better coffee place probably goes there because it's familiar and they
don't feel like trying something new. (Kind of like the way we tend to
go to chain restaurants that aren't going to be as good as the local
joints when we're travelling, but it's a known quantity and better than
a rude surprise, even if it's much worse than a pleasant surprise.)
(And I have no clue on the Krispy Kreme. I guess it appeals to *some*
palate or another. They tried opening one in Austin in the 1980s and it
failed, but they opened one here last year and it's been doing a booming
business. I think that says more about Austin in the 1980s vs. Austin
now than it says about Krispy Kreme.)
