A while ago, GeoCities began to temporarily shut down the web sites of people who had a free website at GeoCities. Their standard excuse for it: "Our records indicate that you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide for a free web site, which is 3 gigabytes per month (measured on an hourly basis)". I get those messages about three times per month, but despite repeated requests, they have failed to provide the data to back their claim.
Now, GeoCities strikes again: as of April 2nd, they will no longer provide FTP access as part of their free service. The purpose, of course, is to get people to sign up for one of their paid services. But why should I? Will I pay USD 4.95 per month for their Plus Package? No, because it does not even include a domain name. Will I pay USD 8.95 per month for their Pro Package? No, because I can get a better deal elsewhere. (The one I am currently looking into offers (among other things) hosting and 200 MB web space for USD 3.99 per month; the GeoCities plans offer only 25 MB). I wonder if the people at GeoCities realise they are probably driving their customers away, instead of getting more customers...
