Eh? Too slow? It's about the same as 10 mbit Ethernet. Although I have
100 mbit Ethernet here, I rarely notice the difference when I'm wireless.
Only big file transfers, like backups, make it noticeable.

I think they'll be able to sniff it, if they're becoming that obnoxious. If
they see traffic coming into your line for port 80, they'll know...
The Mac wouldn't boot into Linux. Rather than trying to diagnose it, I have
yet another option that I forgot about. But it's being difficult about
networking. It's an old laptop, but I need to get drivers working for
either a USB network adapter or... wireless. The latter was working last I
knew, but I think I messed with it to do some wireless exploration. I'll
figure it out this afternoon, probably with a clean install.
