I have seen this happen several times in my lifetime. It is a common tactic of people who cannot accept it when someone else refuses to say "yes, I was completely wrong and you are completely right". They get so angry over it that they decide to attack the person instead of the argument, hoping that it will convince their victim to change his mind (a method which is of course completely counter-productive). They then back out of the discussion, believing that by doing so they cannot and will not be held accountable for their actions.
