Cable runs are absolutely the smartest thing to do. I've helped wire 2 houses now; both we used cable runs, one for CAT-5 and one for an appletalk network (it was a long time ago..) The appleTalk/Mac guy "got religion" and dumped his macs in favor of *nix/windows a couple years ago, and only had to spend an afternoon rewiring his house. > p.s. anyone wanting more specifics on what I or my husband > knows about house networks, just ask, and I'll try to get > back to you with answers sometime Monday (mother-in-law is > visiting, father- and brother-in-law due in this evening; a > full day of work tomorrow is planned, and catching-up time on > Sunday, plus Dan has a work deadline that he might have to > work tomorrow morning to meet, so we're a little swamped > right now...). I'm actually pretty curious about ventilation - are you planning on doing any for your server closet? Anyone know what the working temperature tolerances of CAT-5 is? I'm living in an old Seattle house in which I really can't punch through the walls, and that heating duct (with temps no higher than 90F..) is looking, as responsible as I am, more tempting each day.. *sigh* I know, I know.. its a Bad Idea(tm)... -j-
