If you can get them to me (how big, compressed?), I can load up the entire

That was in MySQL, version 3.x. I'm now using version 4.1, which is
technically an alpha release, but it's very stable.

If you're not administering it, there's no difference from Access, since
they both are SQL databases. SQL is very easy to learn, but it can become
quite challenging. And figuring how to do queries efficiently can be
interesting, too. As I said, you can even use Access or Excel (or any
ODBC-friendly application) as a front end.
Installing MySQL can be a bit difficult, especially with regard to setting
permissions. And that depends on the platform, too. Tweaking it requires
great peace of mind... ;-)
I'm going to see what I can do with the machine that I've set aside for
you... NOW. Before moving takes all my time.
