Fooling around, I found some more dictionaries. I think Cambridge is
British or British/American because I found a mention of the differences.
So, I thought, who knows, maybe the difference is British vs. American
English

I obtained the following definition:

religion
noun
the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or any such system of belief
and worship
She loves to discuss religion. [U]
He practises the Jewish religion. [C]

If an activity is a religion for you, you are extremely enthusiastic about
it and do it regularly.
Golf is a religion for Susan.

religious
adjective
The government wants to increase the amount of religious education in
schools.

If someone is religious, they have a strong belief in a god or gods.
He's deeply religious and goes to church twice a week.

religiously
adverb
India is quite diverse, both politically and religiously.

If you do something religiously, you do it regularly.
He visits his mother religiously every week.

I think that, if one puts these different dictionaries together, one would
have to include stuff like golf as a religion when one includes Marxism or
Objectivism.
