I think the Honda Odyssey, Mitsubishi Nimbus, Renault Espace and Mazda MPV are the only alternatives which can carry a decent size family without going to what the USA'ns call a SUV - but (1) I don't know if they are available in the states, and (2) they are still heavy cars. You can't beat the SUV for chucking a bunch of kids and all their luggage. My brother came up from interstate last weekend, and I could put all my family, all his family, and all his luggage easily in the one car - much better than shuttling around with multiple trips and multiple cars...
