I imagine that the fact that Mary was mentioned in 
this sentence might be interpreted as Jacob being 
_her_ father and not Joseph. You know, translation 
errors from Aramaic to Greek, etc. 
 
[and it seems very unlikely that they would _err_ 
at this point, just three generations before 
the books were written - not to mention that 
it would be simpler to create faked genealogies 
and stick to them if all that was fiction]
