I may see this from a slightly different perspective, I don't think that we are "complacent" as a society (choosing to ignore), but in many cases we may be ill equipped or ill prepared on how to deal with these situations. One example I can give is from my married days, the thought of a spouse as a POW is something that has to be preplanned for on some level. Some things are easily learned since there are vehicles in place, some things are foreign to us in many ways. We need to grow up in sooooooo many ways..... just never enough time it seems.....
