But there are good sides to the changes Roger...I mean Robert, Some of the
changes are apparent, others you wouldn't know about, unless you remember,
but then so few do so seldomly. For instance, who am I? Why do I come and go
from the list often only staying for a few weeks or days. Why is
my...disposition so different than it once was? Why has my picture remained
on the members page even though I was gone for years? Or did it, do you just
remember it that way? Was it really gone, was I really gone? Am I the same
Jan that was here before? Wasn't that one a liberal? This Jan is a
conservative. There are those who remember this, but to them it just seems
that things have changed, not that the STCs changed.
The fact is there never really was a Janelle. Janelle was a construct, an
anomaly, an artifact of... the process.
You see, there are multiple universes, multiple realities. There are actually
four ways in which the multiverse is infinite, but let's focus on the way in
which the anomaly arose. Think of our experience, our memories as a waveform
that is made of all the component waveforms, the component universes. some of
them cancel each other out, others sum up to give a peak here, a troff there
a texture we experience. To be honest such systems have 14 dimensions but the
2D waveform will suffice for this description.
For ...years... physicists pondered why every conceivable mathematical system
pointed to multiple dimensions, and yet we only experience 3, or rather four
including time. It was believed that some of these "extra" dimensions were
wrapped up so small that they could not be detected, and while this is true,
the number of such dimensions did not agree with the mathematics which kept
pointing ridiculously to large scale "extra" dimensions we should be able to
experience. The fact is we do experience these dimensions, and the
interlocking structure of matter and energy in these dimensions, as time. The
experience we have is the complex waveform that results form all of these
dimensions, all realities, all universes and their...interaction on the
structure of these dimensions...remember there are multiple multiples.
Long ago...far away...some time from now...deep within...structurally
distant... the consortium recognized the possibilities of this and began to
build machines to detect this structure, mostly through crude miniature
bombardments and annihilations. The creation of machines which use the
structure for computation were conceived even, on the reckoning of the
consortium, before the nature of time and the multiverse were truly
conceived. later it was discovered that the simple simulation by advanced
versions of such computation machines actually realized the experiment in
another STCs. Simulating the experiment and actually performing the
experiment were/are in effect one and the same. And so was born the ultimate
Virtual Reality, only, it isn't really "virtual" is it.
Fear sept the consortium and safeguards were enacted to keep the "natural"
state of the "experienced universe" from being changed. Religious doctrine
forbade it, the destruction of everything was predicted. But of course, after
some...time...pun intended...the waxing and waning of reality became
commonplace. The only real taboo was/is the alteration or the
Messing-Around-With of the flow of events, the structure of the STC in the
time, or rather the ...area, before the consortium understood it's own
nature. The time of linear humans, your, rather, our, time, our...area of
reality.
Some very mischievous beings conceive of a different outcome, a different
path for those of our area of space. They, in an attempt to make things more
comfortable, more, happy, for humans, and beings of that sort MAW reality.
Make alterations to the experiences of the beings in this part of existence.
To be honest the tools used to make such alterations are not perfect.
Whenever these computations are made, and often more importantly, when they
are corrected there are often flaws. To save expenses, matter, energy, space
on the interlocked dimensions (time), digital rather than analog techniques
are employed in a statistically significant number of events.
The event in question involves the shifting of realities in and around the
individual known as Roger Seteberber. Roger thought it would be better if the
politics of the habitat known as Earth were more in line with the thinking of
the group known as brin-l. Roger's use of a digital realizations in the
construction of the necessary IIR filters (namely one particularly nasty CBP)
to make the desired adjustments is really at the hart of the problem. Roger's
initial alteration did not, in fact, create the memory of Janelle. It was the
restoration algorithm which is actually to blame.
Whenever you use sine waves to approximate an edge as in a square wave you
get what is called the Gibbs effect. The Gibbs effect is a 9 percent
overshoot at the edge itself. This can be seen in most digital pictures as a
line around any strait edge. In Roger's alteration there were some definite
artifacts of this nature. But the processes used by the consortium for
restoring the "natural state" most often do not use such crude methods. The
use of such algorithms in the restoration would leave even more artifacts.
The use of...other methods reduce the artifacts restoring the STC of that
area to a more "natural state". Rest assured that Heisenberg was never wrong,
these other methods also have, unfortunate consequences, one can never be
completely sure just how close the state has been restored.
With the instance in question, the use of digital filtering during
restoration would have created a Gibbs entity who would have been known as
Janelle. She would never have given birth to the first female president, but
would have been a powerful force in the world none the less.
As it is the restoration created the memory of this person only. Well, that
and a few semantic and syntactic differences here and there. And a few other
minor alterations in disposition, political leanings and the like. Nothing so
strange that the memory of the time before the change would be considered too
odd.
Every notice though how the topics of discussion always seem to come back up
again, the same people make the same statements in new ways, the same tiffs
and the same allegiances play out. Sure there are minor changes, but they are
the same arguments, or nearly the same, arnt't they? Round and round like a
test and a control, building statistics which can be analyzed. It doesn't
seem natural does it? I wonder what the consortium is doing about it? I
wonder if they have noticed yet...where? What if they are running their own
MAWs? A minor one, I mean, one that only took place on line wouldn't make
much difference would it? What was it that Janelle would have said had she
existed? Oh yea, "all talk and no action". "All talk"? I wonder what she
would have meant by that?
