Speaking of safety myths and cameras designed to catch traffic violators, has anyone else heard of the practice in some municipalities of *shortening* the yellow light in an effort to catch more people running the red light, creating more revenue? This is rather dangerous, and should be illegal.

who had a close call once crossing at a crosswalk, with a walk light, when someone zipped through the red light in a red sports car, and would have been in the path of the car at the wrong time had she not been slowed down by the crutches -- so *that* injury might have been a lifesaver in the long run
Or one night last year as I was coming home after teaching class: the light was turning yellow and the intersection was clear as I entered an intersection intending to go straight, then just before I reached the middle of the intersection I saw something dark right in front of me, followed by a "THUD" as I rammed head-on into the side of another car whose driver had apparently decided to beat the light and turn left onto the road I was crossing . . .
(I honestly never saw him: not only was the intersection clear but there wasn't a car waiting at the light coming the other way when I started across . . . )
Fortunately, all that was damaged was metal. Mostly on the vehicle he was in. (A very good thing no one was sitting on the passenger's side, though.) The air bag in front of me didn't even go off (which in the situation would probably have made things worse, not better).
