Either:

a)  Curse of Chalion, if you want a fantasy (but not intensely
fantastic) set in not-quite-sure-which-century Spain (IIRC)

b)  Shards of Honor, if you want space opera.  (At least, this is *my*
recommendation as to where to start.)

Once you get into the space opera stuff, if you want help with "what to
read next", there are enough people here who know enough about that
series to be helpful.
