Then he was wrong to do so.

No, of course not. But it's not Daschle who went to
Baghdad and made statements supportive of Saddam
Hussein just before the war. Daschle, incidentally,
has actually made quite a few statements about how
well the war is going and how things are humming along
in Iraq. He's _much_ more responsible than most
members of his party.

I'm not claiming that no Republicans are doing it.
I'm claiming that much more important Democrats are
doing it much more often. Which I think you agree
with, Dan, even if you aren't willing to come right
out and admit it. I'm further claiming (and I don't
think you can deny this one either) that Democrats are
pretty continually whining about how Republicans are
"questioning their patriotism". Well, maybe. But
they're not doing it _nearly_ as often as their
Democratic opponents, who appear to be saying that in
order to protect themselves from any and all criticism
of their (often quite embarassingly bad) foreign
policy records. If you're going to say "my opponent
is questioning my patriotism" as a defense, you're
kind of obligated to not be doing it all the time
yourself. President Bush has - unlike John Kerry -
not been using that claim as a defense all the time
_although he would have much better grounds to do so_.
That, even more than the importance and frequency
with which Democrats are making that claim, is what
makes their behavior far worse.
