I'll second the call for "the Riftwar Saga" ("Magician: Apprentice",
"Magician: Adept", etc, etc.) by Raymond Feist, the Belgariad
(Eddings) and, of course, Tolkien. I picked up Tolkien at about the
same age (maybe a little younger) and though I didn't completely
follow EVERYTHING at that first reading, I did enjoy it. Just warn
her that "The Fellowship of the Ring" starts quite slowly.

I'd also suggest the Tarma and Kethry stories by Mercedes Lackey
("The Oathbound", "The Oathbreakers", also called "the Vows and
Honor" series). They follow a pair of female mercenaries in, what I
thought, were some of the most amazing stories. The fact that they
were women was just completely accepted and, almost, ignored. It
was refeshing to read books where the female characters aren't
always fighting the fact that they are "women in a man's world".

I would NOT suggest the Songs of Ice and Fire series by George R. R.
Martin. I really liked it but it is a VERY mature series and might
not be right for a 14 year old. Lots of sex (LOTS) and gory
violence.

"Tailchaser's Song" by Tad Williams is a good story about talking
cats. There's always Piers Anthony - the early Xanth books are
light-hearted fun.

More later if I can think of any others...
