The obvious is Tolkien.  I think he is suitable for a 14 year old.  Though
you think she is not "particularly mature", I suspect she isn't naive.
Others you might look at are:

George R. R. Martin        Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings (the Songs of Ice
and Fire) series.  A lot of violence.
Raymond E. Feist            Magician (this is a book I'm reading for my SF
and Fantasy course--I'm not a fantasy fan, but looks promising)
Lois McMaster Bujold    The Curse of Chalion followed by The Paladin of
Souls (this year's Hugo winner)

I agree with you, get them reading.
