I'm surprised that someone didn't recommend the Piers Anthony "Xanth" novels. I enjoyed them as a teenager and then again as an adult, although when I read them as an adult, some of the puns and clich's were groaners. For example... Throwing a dime down in front of a fairy to stop them... stopping on a dime :-) The "Xanth" series has everything a 14 your old girl would love: drama, suspense, dragons, princes, princesses, magic, mermaids, centaurs, etc. The stories take place in the country of "Mundania" which suspiciously looks like Florida. Xanth is the magical alternate universe of Mundania. The second link below has an excellent summary of the series and the Xanth universe. That series is age appropriate for a 14 year old, but can also be enjoyed by an adult that likes that genre. I would let my 11 year old daughter read it if she would pull her nose out of a Harry Potter book long enough to do so.
