Ah, talking about WFDF and UPA rules eh?

I like the logic:
-[A stall count] consists of the marker calling, "Stalling," and then
counting at one second intervals to ten.
-A player is said to be guarding the thrower if he or she is within 3
m of the thrower's pivot foot

So, the person counting the numbers must be the marker, and so must be
within 3m.

But hang on, surely you can guard a player without marking them?
Guarding is the first point under 'The Marker', but it doesn't say
they are equivalent (although yes this would be a fair
interpretation).
Also, WFDF says you're guarding someone so long as you're "not within
3 m of any other member of the offensive team" - so if a handler just
ran towards you, you'd have to stop stalling.

The point I'm trying to get at is that there are countless grey areas
and contradictions in the WFDF ruleset, and it would be much easier to
be able to refer to something as simple as "Only a marker within three
meters of the thrower's point of ground contact may initiate or
continue a stall count."
The UPA rules have actually been updated to settle the ambiguities,
and there are rarely differing interpretations (of the rules, not of
the play) on the pitch at UPA Nationals - they just get on with it and
play ultimate.
Also note the 'point of ground contact' / 'pivot foot' difference -
it's all been thought about, so your pivot point doesn't -have- to be
a foot like it does (I think, it's probably ambiguous) in the WFDF
ruleset.

I certainly don't think it's the UKUA's job to force interpretation
onto the rules. At the end of the day, all we have is the
interpretation of the WFDF rules as the spirit of them sets out:

"The purpose of the rules of ultimate is to provide a guideline which
describes the way the game is played. It is assumed that no ultimate
player will intentionally violate the rules; there are no harsh
penalties for inadvertent infractions but, rather, a method for
resuming play in a manner which simulates what would most likely have
occurred had there been no infraction."

ps. I've not fully read through the UPA rules myself, simply because I
don't want to get confused and then be one of these people who
constantly 'quotes' UPA rules at Tour
pps. did anyone else notice the brick mark was 10 yards not 20m up the
playing field proper at T1A? caught me off guard once as I was
walking to the 20m point and it got played from the brick.. I didn't
call anything of course because, well, he took it from the brick mark,
although "[On a brick,] The player may then carry the disc to the
appropriate place, touch it to the ground, call, "Disc in play,", and
put the disc in play."
Call "Disc in play"? who would do that?
