Hey Oscar (and everyone else),

I've just had a look at the schedule for mixed this weekend and I
think you're right... there is indeed a round of crossovers missed
out; meaning that the teams are split into 4 groups (top 8, second 8
etc), and it is impossible to get more than one group difference from
where you started from (eg, if I start at the bottom in group 4 and
win every game, I will be in group 3; if I'm in group 1 and loose
every game I will be in group 2, and likewise for the other groups)...
this missing crossover could be because of the FA cup break, I'm not
too sure on that one (everyone has 3 games on saturday, 3 on sunday).
I think for the most part this should work well as long as the teams
are seeded correctly to begin with, but a problem arises when the
initial seedings aren't quite right and a team can spend 3 events
working their way to the top without loosing a single game, whereas a
higher seeded team can afford to loose several games over the 3 events
and still be at the top... but they'll have harder games of course.

From what I read about tour 0 the schedule had great thought put into
it, most teams were no more than a pitch away from where their last
game was, and no 'fresh' team had to play a 'worn' team; which seems
like a really sensible idea in my book, and also seems to be the case
for this weekend.

Unless you missed a tour event (eg if you went to cube instead of MT1)
everything should work out; sadly everyone missed MT2 which throws a
spanner in the works. As places for nationals are awarded by 'tour
points', those with high initial seedings are bound to win more points
and qualify for nationals because they have to finish a group away
from where they started; I'm now beginning to think that a points
system (like football) might work better, but I can't work out how
unless every team plays every other team over the course of tour
leading up to nationals; if this were implemented and only 32 teams
entered mixed next year every team would need to play 31 games before
nationals, which is silly.

Perhaps the world cup format which also has 32 teams would be a better
one to follow (group games, second round, quarters, semis, final) even
if its a knockout format; this would be 7 games each and would fit
into a weekend quite nicely.

Then again; I quite often end up playing the same team twice at
tournaments, I don't think any schedule will ever be perfect. Thanks
to the people that write them, some say the way to gauge success is by
the number of complaints you get.

Also, people seemed happy with the schedule at the top end but I'm not sure
how a team can lose 1 game all weekend and, in a fair schedule, finish 27th?
I think there was probably a potential round of cross-overs that were, for
some reason, missed out. I heard disturbing rumours that there is a UKUA
scheduling committee and that these people were not consulted by the TDs for
MT1.
If this is not the case and, I emphasise, it is only hearsay, then I fully
and whole-heartedly apologise but it still grates a little that we finished
so low despite performing much better than we expected to.

As ever, my views and not, necessarily, those of my team (at least on the
points related to Mixed Tour).

Oscar
