I just added a scaling parameter to mged & archer's autoview commands. I left the default at half the view, but it seems to be doing the trick to allow specifying different scale parameters. Interestingly enough, I may have been wrong about the diagonal. At a glance, it looks like it's simply using the view width and a bounding sphere around the model bounding box. Regardless, now that there's an option, it sets the stage for changing the default to something more tight-fitting. Cheers!
