Ok, I got a little confuse by all this. Since you are using Widoze 8.1, I assume you do not have a native com post, so you will need a USB-to-serial cable. Such a cable has a nine pin connector on the end. There are many to choose from, but you need to be aware that many are based on the Proflic chip set which is a big problem in Win 7 & 8 as the chips may be fake. Try to find a cable that uses a genuine FTDI chip set. Such cables will automatically install under Windoze and most other OSs. You can find the assigned com port number in device manager.
