Not quite correct.

Since you bought a SignalinkUSB. It should have come with two cables. One goes
to the radio. It has an RJ-45 at one end. The other end terminates in the
connectors specific for the radio you are using. The second cable has a USB
connector on one end that goes to the computer and a mini USB that goes to the
Signalink. No 9 pin connectors needed.

IF your Signalink USB did not come with these cables, you can order the correct
cable set from Tigertonics or DX Engineering. You may also need to set up the
jumper block for your specific radio or you can buy a preprinted jumper block
from DX Engineering for a nominal fee.

Windows will detect a device that is plugged into a USB. In this case it sees
the Signalink as a sound card. You’ll see it in your list of sound card
devices as USB Audio CODEC. It does not require a com port at least for the
two programs I’ve used; FLDigi and Digipan. However, you will need a com port
for rig Control for HRD or other logging programs. That is a separate issue
but as long as you have your radio tied into HRD for your other modes, you
should be good.

Ok, I got a little confuse by all this. Since you are using Widoze 8.1, I
assume you do not have a native com post, so you will need a USB-to-serial
cable. Such a cable has a nine pin connector on the end. There are many to
choose from, but you need to be aware that many are based on the Proflic chip
set which is a big problem in Win 7 & 8 as the chips may be fake. Try to find
a cable that uses a genuine FTDI chip set. Such cables will automatically
install under Windoze and most other OSs. You can find the assigned com port
number in device manager.

Not quite! The Signallink is a usb sound card. Check device manager and/or the
control panel, and look for a usb sound device. You will need to set your
digital mode software to use it e.g., DM780, Digipan or whatever.

If it recognizes the device as a com port, then it creates its own device.
