You can get a CAT cable with the FTDI chipset from Valley Enterprises.

I have purchased several from them.

Subject: Re: [BVARC] CREATING A COM PORT IN WINDOWS 8.1

Randy,

I use Windows 8.1 with a SignaLink USB along with my FT817.

I had problems getting the USB to FT817 CAT cable to work at times on every
computer I tried...but no problems at all with PnP detecting the SignaLink to
use as the sound card.

My CAT cable has a USB connector at one end and a CAT port connector at the
other. Unfortunately, it has a Prolific chipset converter that doesn't play at
all with Windows 8.x. I used it regularly with Windows 7 before my laptop
crashed. I bought an el-cheapo Chinese bluetooth adapter for $6 which actually
works most of the time with Windows 8. It took the USB conversion totally out
of the picture, but its power is driven from the FT817 CAT port. Not nice for
portable operation.

So...you need to setup 2 different items:

1) The SignaLink configured in the sound card setup

2) A CAT cable configured as the port requested when you start HRD

Not sure if that helps....

IMHO...HRD is a bit flakey and gets picky about the ports you select for your
CAT cable. I have had to change the COM port setup in Control Panel and force
mine to COM 1-4 at times to get it to work.Never figured out why HRD sometimes
doesn't see all the COM ports.

Ok, I got a little confuse by all this. Since you are using Widoze 8.1, I
assume you do not have a native com post, so you will need a USB-to-serial
cable. Such a cable has a nine pin connector on the end. There are many to
choose from, but you need to be aware that many are based on the Proflic chip
set which is a big problem in Win 7 & 8 as the chips may be fake. Try to find
a cable that uses a genuine FTDI chip set. Such cables will automatically
install under Windoze and most other OSs. You can find the assigned com port
number in device manager.

Not quite! The Signallink is a usb sound card. Check device manager and/or the
control panel, and look for a usb sound device. You will need to set your
digital mode software to use it e.g., DM780, Digipan or whatever.

If it recognizes the device as a com port, then it creates its own device.
