Jeff, you've hit on a very important point. I've always been a "group" kinda
guy, starting with Cub and Boy Scouts, school science club as well as various
bands I've played in. And then there've been volunteer religious groups. It's
quite natural to bond with one person and not another, but I think you always
have to look around and try to pull others in. So yes it's very important to
reach out to newcomers, even if you're not inviting them over for a family get
together.

On the other hand, as a new person in a group, and I don't care what kind of
group we're talking about, if you don't put yourself into the mix, you'll never
mix in. Jeff's experience is a good case in point. When you jump in to help
with a project or a job, you will find yourself building relationships. It's
working and learning together that brings a person into the group dynamic. If
you don't step in, persistently, you'll probably always be out.

Show up, reach out, be open, and understand that friendships are usually long
term projects. That said, be a project manager.
