Hello all,

There's a local exploit available for Debian and Ubuntu flavors (and
probably others) of Linux:

http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/10/2011257

This means that most of the machines will be getting kernel updates in
the next few days or sooner.

Impact on ByteWorks:

1) Ubuntu infrastructure machines: for the mini-server, shop server,
and samba fileserver this is probably a non-issue as it's a local
exploit (i.e. has to be an inside job). As soon as the updated kernel
comes out, the machines will be automatically updated.

2) Asterix machine (PBX phone system): don't know. Dan?

3) Ubuntu portion of classroom machines: whenever someone has a
chance, the machines should be booted into Ubuntu, updated, and
rebooted.

4) Debian portion of classroom machines: update, modify grub menu.lst
manually on Ubuntu partition, reboot to test.

In short, this is something we need to address soon, but it's not a emergency.

Regards,
- Robert
