Hello David:

The "normal" focal length for any format can be found
by using pythagorean theorem. The aquare root of the
sides aquared and added thus:

     11 X 11 = 121
    +14 X 14 = 196
----------------------
               317

and the square root of 317 is 17.804493. So the
"normal" lens for your 11X14 is 17.8 inch. Multiply by
25.4 to get the metric equivalent of 452mm
approximately.
