The old rule of thumb for "normal" focal length coverage in enlargers and
cameras is to measure the diagonal of the negative itself.  The diagonal
should be equivalent to the focal length of the lens you would need for
normal coverage in printing or shooting.  Years ago, I built a 16 X 20 inch
camera and found this rule of thumb worked fine as a benchmark for both
coverage and what would be considered a "normal"  angle of view.  A 24 inch
lens was about the distance of the diagonal of 16 X 20 and produced normal
coverage, while a 17 inch lens required a special wide angle design and was
equivalent to wide angle lens (between 28-35mm on a 35mm format.)
