Hi David,
As others have replied, you will need about an 18" lens for the normal focal
length. The design of the lens also is important though. What sort of
photographs do you plan to make? I have an 18" f/4 Verito Diffused Focus
lens that should be great for 3/4 portraiture, a 24" Red Dot Artar for
sharper head shots and longer focal length work, plus a 12" Velostigmat as
well as a 210mm f/6.8 Angulon that just barely covers the film for wider work.
If you are building the 11x14 camera (I have one in progress and another
field camera to shoot with in the interim) you also need to consider the
physical size of the lens +/- shutter, and the total bellows extension you'll
need. Take for example the 18" f/4 Verito which is a huge lens requiring a
6" lensboard and 8 1/2" square packard shutter (unless you can find an old
studio shutter for it) and at least 18" of bellows to focus on anything. I
can't use this lens on my field camera due to it's size and the fact that the
field camera bellows is only about 15" total extension. The Velostigmat and
Angulon are OK on that camera though. To do some head shots with the 24"
Artar is going to require about 36" of bellows, etc. So your camera design
and intentions dictate what your lens choice should be.
