 My 8x10 Durst  color head uses a  squarish mixing box lined with white styrofoam to 
create a none directional light source which then goes thru a diffusing layer of 
opaque plastic to create  more even light . You could use a halogen light source 
coming in from the side, so that the negative never "sees" the Light source directly.
