    Probably the best might be to use a sheet of opal glass as a 
diffuser; you may be able to find one in an old Kodak transparency 
viewer. By using an array of bulbs as you planned, you gain the 
advantage of being able to dodge prints in the lamphouse by virtue of 
switching the lamps individually. Sort of like an old Morse contact 
printer on steroids. It's a thoroughly workable scheme and you could 
even make your own groundglass diffusers fairly easily and cheaply with 
valve grinding compound and ordinary picture frame glass.
    With a large area of bulbs like that, you should also consider 
adding in a whisper fan or two for cooling the lightbox. They are well 
balanced, quiet and around $20 for 115 volt units.
