Absolutely essential, imho. As a newcomer to tabbing browsers (but an old hand, who habitually has a couple of dozen windows open!) I have to confess to constantly cursing the way they work (while admitting they have enough benefits to leave the feature enabled!)

My problem is simply this: I'm so habituated to opening endless windows within which to chase multiple threads of enquiry and then working through periodically and closing those windows that have ceased to be of interest, that when I do this with a tabbing browser, I still close the WINDOW when I've finished with the top-most tab. For me, therefore, it is vital that I have a prominent reminder that I still have other tabs active within that same window.

As to the favicons/progress spinner/close widget positioning, I don't like too much stuff in a tab.

I agree that tabs shouldn't get too cluttered. I like having the favicon visible though, as it serves as a useful reminder of the site that the tab is associated with -- something the page title doesn't always indicate. I find that I now navigate through my tabs much more by favicon than title. (And besides, I just spent some time adding favicons to my web site, so I like to see the results in my browser! :) )

That said, it feels weird having the favicon to the right of the title, as the de facto emerging standard is for it to be to the left.

If anything, I'd prefer the close widget to be less easy to activate (I close way too much by accident as it is!) I'd quite like the close widget to be taken off the tab altogether. The current ctrl-click to access the close (and other) operations is just fine as it is, as far as I'm concerned! Or, (being a great believer in giving the 'option' key something to do) have the option key switch the favicon into a close widget.
