And I would have to agree as well. Tabs should look like tabs and the active tab should be clearly highlighted against the inactive ones.

As to the favicons/progress spinner/close widget positioning, I don't like too much stuff in a tab. So I prefer to either forget about favicons (they're in the URL bar anyway),

But not until the site is brought up. When tabs are squished to a very thin width and the title is obscured, the favicons are an easy way to identify the content under the tab.

If people absolutely must have a favicon, it should be a preference setting and then have the spinner replaced by the favicon (clicking on the favicon closes the tab; this could be indicated in the preference setting like "Use favicons on tabs instead of close button (click on favicon to close tab)". But please, only one widget per tab.

Problem there. The favicon should be for dragging, not closing. And having a close widget on the tab is definitely a plus. Using a 'close tab' icon in the toolbar, i've found it much too easy to close the wrong tab.

It's very handy to be able to close a currently backgrounded tab.
